A Quick Guide to Car Detailing

Car detailing is complete and thorough cleaning of a car both inside and out, consisting of exterior detailing and interior detailing. The overall aim of car detailing is to make your car look brand new, from the interior, carpets and seats to the exterior wheels and paint. Car detailing does not only give your car a ‘showroom’ look it will help retain some value.

So what can you expect from car detailing?

Exterior Detailing

The process of exterior detailing can vary, however most car detailing companies will follow similar steps.

  1. Firstly, a detailer will hand wash and dry the car removing any grime or dirt that may damage the paint.
  2. Secondly, a clay bar is applied to the paint work of the car to remove any dirt, sap or particles from the clear coat.
  3. Thirdly, a wax will be applied to remove any marks left on the paint work and as further protection.

As well as the main body of the car special attention should be given to wheels and under the car. The undercarriage and wheel wells should be cleaned as well as the components under the car including suspension, chrome should also be polished. Many detailers will dress tyres, plastic trim and vinyl to protect them from cracking or fading.

Many car detailers will also offer engine detailing normally as an extra service, and can be very important. This process normally involves spraying the engine with water and dressing the plastic and other components so they are not corroded or start to crack.

Interior Detailing

The interior of a car can be just as important as the outside, interior detailing include the cleaning of seats and carpets. There are different ways the cleaning process may happen normally the seats and carpets will be steam cleaned or shampooed. If the seats are leather these will be treated with special cleaning products and all trims will also be treated. The boot of the car will also be cleaned in most cases.

A standard car detailing will include the above but you may chose added extras depending on the outcome you want. At the end of the detailing your car should look and feel brand new.
